BLANKSLATE - HEAD ROOM SESSIONS NO. 52

By Jane McDonald

Denver Indie Rock Band Blankslate Shakes Things Up at Leon Art Gallery

Following a rowdy sound check Emma Troughton of Blankslate cheekily acknowledges the audience, “we’re going to be loud, but the 2nd song is quieter.” But it’s too late! The packed-full audience is already geared up for a heavy hitting set from this trio.

An Emotional Rollercoaster of a Set

As promised, they begin boisterously with “Little Love”, one of three new songs session listeners are treated to tonight. Presenting their signature indie-pop sound (paired with the spirit of Riot Grrls), Blankslate immediately engages the audience with their energy and apparent love of performing. Drummer Tess Condron adds to Emma’s vocals, pleading “you just haven’t seen my good side yet!” and flashing an infectious smile that can occasionally be seen through a mass of head-banging curly blonde hair.

They follow up with “Aptos”, which Emma shares is a “song about being trans by the ocean.” A vulnerable and nostalgic tune, Guitarist Rylee Dunn effectively builds throughout until her spirited jumping can no longer be contained as the song reaches an emotional pinnacle. This chugging track was a standout for me, and I daresay deserving of anthem status. Blankslate completes their set with “A Fragile Thing”, a powerful yet pretty song that showcases Emma’s beautiful voice with more delicate instrumental moments.

Don’t Miss Blankslate’s Future Shows!
