After not gathering in person for 2 long years, Head Room Session #51 is vibrating with the promise of live music. Excited conversations fill the air until it is finally time for Moon Roof to take the stage and provide us with a much-needed outlet to groove.
A self-described experimental hip-hop / pop and soul duo, Zuri Leigh acts as lead singer and songwriter, while Transiit produces and co-performs. Moon Roof opens with “Gemini”, a playfully sampled groove about a dynamic partnership that ranges from lover to twin. A slight smokiness in Transiit’s voice compliments Zuri Leigh’s beautifully clear tone nicely. They follow up with “Golden”, sharing with the audience that it is a song about how “everyone has value in their own way.” The duo passes verses back and forth expressing admiration and wonder for the other’s golden soul, and ultimately acknowledging their own glow up. The sweet lyrics of these first two tracks, paired with their apparent comfort performing together (and maybe a few stolen glances), has this closet romantic wondering if / hoping they are a duo off stage, as well as on! < Insert heart eyes emoji. >
Moon Roof hits their session stride with the final track “No Sense”. A departure from the slow(er) romantic jams, this song features lovely harmonizations and a beat that begs for a dance floor. Musing on the uncertainty of life, the chorus is a celebration of living for the present and savoring moments of joy. The set closes with a charming laugh from Zuri Leigh and her appreciation of the clearly entertained audience.
Both artists have played with various Denver bands, as well as make music independently. Be sure to keep an eye out for this fresh Denver act (and *Instagram confirmed* couple) around town this summer!
